General information

The Asia-Pacific Skating Symposium will be an International workshop to assist in designing a mid to long-term strategic plan for skating in the Asia-Pacific region. The objective is to create uniformity in performance and technique amongst skaters worldwide and ultimately ensure more competitiveness between Asia-Pacific coun- tries and the more dominant European and South Americans.

The education of coaches and judges is essential for the continuous development of skaters.

The concept of an Asia-Pacific Symposium arose from the technical and performance gap that exists between this region and Europe / South America, the two continents that are now dominating the skating world.

The Symposium is needed to educate and train coaches and judges and establish unity within our sport.

The Symposium will be held in Perth, Western Australia, from 29th November to 3rd December 2017. Perth has been selected because it is the nearest Australian Capital city to Europe, strategically located to India, and in the similar time zone as Taiwan, Hong Kong, eastern China and Japan. Importantly, Hugo Chapouto has indicated his support and has confirmed his involvement together with Gabriele Quirini, who has coached many world champions in free skating. Nicola Genchi, who is the new Chairman of Artistic Technical Committee and judge is also involved in the project and will be delivering the new judging system (Rollart), which will be taking place at Worlds Championship in 2019.

Objectives

At a world level, countries from the Asia-Pacific region tend to be less exposed to competition in comparison to the Europeans and South Americans. In addition, costs of travelling are greater too, which affects substantially skaters experience at in- ternational level. The result is a lack of consistency in performance and desired high skating standards, due to absence in exposure to international judges, inability to be mentally prepared and experience to adjust to a high level competition.

The Asia-Pacific Skating Symposium aims to educate, promote and facilitate the learning of new techniques in dance and freeskating, in order to develop uniformity around the world, by improving performance at an international level. It will give the coaches the ability to train skaters and provide them uniform assessment, so when they are ready to go to the junior level, they should also be qualified for the major world events, compete with confidence and most importantly be competitive.

The ultimate goal is to produce internationally competitive athletes and therefore en- sure that our sport gains momentum and increase international exposure and recogni- tion.
